This archive records the Chongqing section of the MORE LIFE journey in May 2023, centered around Hongya Cave and the night atmosphere along the Jialing River. After moving through mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and old streets, Chongqing felt like a city built in layers. Roads did not simply move forward; they climbed, dropped, turned, crossed bridges, disappeared into tunnels, and reappeared above another level of the city. The first impression was not only visual, but spatial. Chongqing felt vertical, humid, crowded, glowing, and constantly in motion.

Hongya Cave became the clearest symbol of that feeling. Built against the cliffside near the river, its stilted building form recalls the traditional diaojiaolou architecture of the region, but at night it transforms into something almost cinematic. Warm golden lights cover the wooden structures, bridges cut across the background, traffic moves above and below, and the river reflects pieces of the city back into the darkness. From one angle, it feels like an old mountain-town memory. From another, it feels like a giant urban stage where tourists, vendors, cars, lights, and river wind all move at the same time.

What made Chongqing memorable was the way old and new seemed to overlap without needing to fully separate. Around Hongya Cave, traditional-style architecture, commercial signs, food stalls, crowds, high-rise buildings, bridges, and elevated roads all existed in one frame. The city did not present itself as clean or simple. It was dense, noisy, slightly chaotic, and full of texture. That complexity became the character of the place. Every staircase, platform, river-view railing, and roadside corner offered a different relationship between people and the city.

For photography, Chongqing was about night, height, compression, and atmosphere. The light was strong but uneven, the crowds were constant, and the background was always layered with another bridge, building, or road. Some images belonged to Hongya Cave’s glowing façade; some belonged to food, people, traffic, reflections, and small pauses beside the river. It was not a place that needed to be made dramatic. The city already carried its own drama.
