This archive records the Shanghai section of the MORE LIFE journey in May 2023. As the starting point of this wider route through China, Shanghai felt less like a single destination and more like the opening frame of the whole trip. Before the mountains, temples, waterfalls, rivers, caves, and old streets that followed, there was the speed and density of Shanghai: glass towers, elevated roads, subway movement, riverfront lights, old lane houses, commercial streets, hotel windows, and the constant feeling of a city moving faster than the people walking through it.

Shanghai has a very specific visual tension. It is modern, but not only modern. It is historical, but not frozen in the past. Around the city, different layers sit close together: the skyline across the Huangpu River, the older textures of street corners, shopping districts, residential lanes, cafés, restaurants, traffic lights, wet pavement, and people passing through each other’s routines. The city can feel polished from far away, especially at night when the skyline becomes clean and iconic. But at street level, it becomes more detailed and human: delivery riders waiting at corners, signs stacked above storefronts, reflections on glass, old walls beside new interiors, and small daily scenes happening beneath the scale of the city.

What made Shanghai important in this journey was its contrast with everything that came after. It was the city before the road opened. The pace here was faster, more urban, and more compressed. After Shanghai, the trip moved toward Buddhist mountains, river landscapes, caves, canyon paths, coastal temples, and inland cities. Looking back, Shanghai became a kind of visual baseline: the place where the journey still belonged to streets, lights, traffic, and city rhythm before it gradually moved into slower landscapes.

For photography, Shanghai was about reflection, structure, and motion. The images were built from lines, surfaces, windows, night light, passing people, and the contrast between distance and detail. Some photographs belonged to the skyline and city scale; others belonged to small moments on the street. It was a place where the camera had to move between wide urban identity and quiet personal observation.
